The Pavilion is located in the courtyard of the Michelin two-star restaurant Yongfoo Elite of Yongfu Road, Shanghai. The restaurant used to be the former British consulate. Also as a fashion designer, the restaurateur hopes to have a “place generator” to showcase cross-disciplinary creations. Full of tall trees on site, the outline of the pavilion is emerged by coordination between the lines of sight and the positions of the trunks. After clearing up the clumps of shrubs, in response to tolerance and randomness required by in-situ construction, we use bamboo steel pillars with different section sizes and inclination angles as the main structure, covered with translucent Tyvek fiber paper. The door and window openings of the pavilion are sewed on the fiber paper in the form of zippers and magnetic strips while the bamboo steel pillars are woven with nylon ropes to form a support system for the roof and the walls. Illuminated from within, it is like a "paper lantern" floating in the woods. The unique fiber texture of Tyvek in a way alludes to the primitive simplicity of rice paper.
