Parks are essential to our well-being; this has never been clearer than it is today, and a recent surge of park development offers us much to celebrate. Parks of the 21st Century presents 52 parks in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Europe, and China that have turned despoiled and polluted land (including former factories, railroads, and industrial waterfronts) into beneficial landscapes.
 
Landscape architects have been referred to as “the first environmentalists,” and Parks of the 21st Century shows how parks are being designed as proactive, dynamic green spaces. The High Line in New York is an early example of how an obsolete railroad could be transformed. Opened in 2009, it now attracts nearly 8 million visitors a year. In addition to providing public open space, these renewed landscapes offer economic revitalization and large-scale environmental improvement. Among the parks featured in this book are designed by well-known professionals such as James Corner Field Operations, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Kongjian Yu/Turenscape, and Catherine Mosbach.

Ecomobility and Revitalization of Huangpu Waterfront in Shanghai, China
REQUALIFICATION OF THE EAST WATERFRONT

Continuing north, the Minsheng Wharf Waterfront, designed by Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects, is the most recent project for the revitalisation of the eastern edge. Once again, a bridge provides access to a linear park crossed by a suspended bicycle-pedestrian path. The design and articulated section of the site reveal a sophisticated interaction between topography and infrastructure: green slopes, paths, terraces and plazas, where the design of the new, by transforming existing industrial structures, pursues the continuity of spaces, landscapes and circulation.

Research of the Industrial Waterfront Transformation along Shanghai Huangpu Riverside from the Perspective of Production of Space

Abstract: Focusing on such issues as post-industrial aesthetics, ecological restoration and industrial transformation and other issues, existing researches on industrial waterfront transformation have failed to reveal the relationship and trend between physical space renewal and urban daily life reconstruction in the process of waterfront transformation from de-industrialization to publicization. This paper, based on the production of space theory of Lefebvre, discusses the value orientation of industrial heritage selection and interpretation, and the design strategy of the boundary of the urban open spaces, through participating in design practice projects, collecting and analyzing related planning and design schemes, criteria and reports of informal planning means and formal planning mechanism in the four key driving events of Huangpu waterfront transformation since 2002. It summarizes that the transformation of industrial waterfront of Huangpu River can be regarded as the practice of landscape urbanism, and expresses the interactive influence from top to bottom and from bottom to top. The research concludes that the non-hierarchical design orientation to the transformation of industrial heritage, is an important factor to promote the diversified daily life of everydayness in urban waterfront.

ABSTRACT: Through analyzing the spatial, structural, constructional, and tectonic characteristics of XY Yunhouse Pavilion and Pool, this article reveals the tension between the honest expression of constructional logic and the visual illusion of the vanishing of structural elements. It tries to formulate the inherent characteristics of dissolved space with the intense tectonics in this pavilion and to re-consider the construction process itself critically.

江桥申窑艺术中心是原有旧厂区改造成为以展示陶瓷艺术为主要目的的创意艺术园区。受园区业主自身对陶瓷艺术的理解：“一件成功的陶瓷作品背后是99 件被打碎的瓷器”的启发，设计方案分别以“素胚瓷片”和“彩釉瓷片”作为一期和二期的概念，演绎出原形母题谱系，由此呈现出与陶瓷艺术相契合的主调性，从一期的立面形式语汇到二期成为空间上的演化体现。项目历时五年，今天看到的成果是尝试打破与增容，并以空间递进的设计手法来表达破碎与重整的结果，回溯整个过程确如素胚经历柴窑之火蜕变成瓷。

Building small guesthouses and hotels is an mportant task for China’s new generation f architects. Many of these buildings are characterised by unconventional designs and a sensitive use of materials. Their architecture often makes references to the local contextand cultural tradition. This book presents 20 exceptional guesthouses and hotels that have opened in China in recent years. A good number of them have been built in the countryside in an effort to improve living conditions there by encouraging sensitive tourism and to slow the rate of rural flight. The book reveals what distinguishes these places for an overnight stay.

对上海民生码头水岸改造及贯通项目的3 个子项目——三线链接水岸改造及贯通、洋泾港桥、民生轮渡站的设计策略进行了系统梳理。基于城市设计的整体性和延续性，民生码头水岸改造及贯通作为景观基础设施激活水岸断点与强化游憩体验，重启了城市环境中需要保持的平衡及感性，使其成为一个日常维度服务人民的城市焦点滨水空间。 文：刘宇扬，马蒂奥·莫斯卡泰利（Matteo Moscatelli）

申窑艺术中心（一期）位于上海嘉定京沪高速公路旁，原建筑是一组20 世纪90年代的工业车间和辅楼，设计师对其进行了全面的改造与更新。方案取“素胚瓷片”为概念，抽离出来的片状弧面形成了建筑外立面的原型母题和主展厅的基本语汇。设计保留了原有的建筑结构和场地关系，但通过内部钢结构夹层的增量，原空间的工业属性被赋予新的艺术氛围及业态内容。封闭且庞大的车间体量被打开，新置入的景观连廊和玻璃天棚让园区的前后场地得以连接，室内空间得以更好地被入驻企业及人群所使用。

面向未来此片区的进一步发展，一方面意图通过渐进的方式逐步完善空间；另一方面，在“设计解剖”与重塑文化的同时，让本区域成为周边市民参与的互动开放的城市公共空间。在未来，改造后的“申窑艺术中心”将作为北虹桥艺术示范园区与东侧的公园相呼应，成为激活城市存量再利用的有效设计。 文：刘宇扬，吴从宝

不论是工业还是手工业，人类的制造活动总离不开工具。工具的演变史亦常作为人类进化史的切入角度，几次工具的革新都成为了人类进化历程中的拐点。 从考古的角度来看，旧石器时代中出现了两种最基本的工具类型：用以劈凿事物的石刀，用以穿刺事物的骨刺。它们不仅是打猎、切割的工具，也是后来人工取火的工具：“钻燧取火”与“钻木取火”的两个典故可为印证，其中“木钻”正是穿刺工具的类型变体。人工取火的能力催生了一些新的技术：比如熔炉技术、铸造技术等等，此时的工具也出现了新的类型变体与新的类型组合：劈凿工具细化出用以切割的锯子和刀子，穿刺工具细化出用以穿钉的钉子，两种基本类型的组合出现了用以斧凿的锤子。这三类工具和他们产生的建筑学意义，对我们接下来要谈论的轻质木框架体系至关重要。 文：张峰

上海万科实验幼儿园是我们设计建成的第一座幼儿园，它最终呈现出的结果，是在新城规划模式、用地限制、15班全日制公立幼儿园的规划指标及设计规范等诸多限制条件下，从解决问题的层面推敲得出的最优方案。

The countryside is now a testing ground for contemporary art and culture. The avant garde and the vernacular, and the creative and the traditional, meet and result in new sparks. It is not only an expression of culture and a reflection of globalization, but also a revitalization of history and village with artistic and cultural approaches. With memories, cultural events, and the combination of both the old and the new, architects are committed to rural reconstruction not only with architecture’s material content and its cultural meanings.

家是一个人忠于自我的场所，家的建筑设计，也应回归本源。建筑师的生活、工作和家庭很难完全分开，对空间和使用的灵活度也会有更高要求。因此建筑师不是 通过各种软装来加强视觉感受、提升舒适度，而是通过对空间的组织和细节的打磨，给居住者独立清净的氛围，井井有条的高效空间，以及让时间变慢的光影与风景。 文：刘宇扬

Under the sustainable concept of reuse and digestion, the park was revitalized through an innovative design approach. The park re-utilized a large amount of existing earthwork to form new topography, and waste materials were packed into galvanized metal gabions and piled up as landscape installations. The design team decided to restore a good resting space and community park for the neighborhood.

At Beijing Cidi Memo iTown, an old factory zone, owned collectively by villagers and constructed with rudimentary techniques, has been renovated and transformed, leapfrogging the industrial mode of production which emphasizes efficiency, order, and standardization, and marching into the post-industrial era which embraces ideas, individuality, multiplicity, and customization. In China’s rapid urbanization over the past few decades, the disposal of construction waste is a problem that is not very well received by the construction industry. The architects are busy building new houses, but they are helpless about the environmental pollution caused by massive construction. In the construction waste, 98% of the waste is piled up in the open air or simply filled in. And also, the architects’ design strategy against environmental problems, should not be limited to the building technology application. “Architecture” must be redefined as the core values of ecological infrastructure through a wider range of studies with site, community, and urban. And it should arouse all stakeholders the fear of the natural environment to leave the pure land for sustainable development.

公园位于虹桥枢纽以北约5 km的江桥镇，是沿着吴淞江北岸的一块废地。由于周围的城市开发和拆迁，大量的建筑废土遗留下来，对周边的环境形成了一定的压力。除了把这些土方搬移到其他地块上，相关部门一直也拿不出更好的对策去处理这个问题。

早在2002年上海市就宣布实施包括2010年上海世博会会址在内的“黄浦江两岸综合开发规划”，标志着黄浦江两岸地区开发正式上升为上海市的重大战略。借世博会的契机，滨江空间得到了改善，工业遗产进行了改造再利用。根据2016年底上海市公布的《黄浦江两岸地区发展“十三五”规划》，中心区段（杨浦大桥至徐浦大桥两侧约45km岸线）滨江公共空间将在2017年底实现全面贯通。民生码头段位于黄浦江下游南岸，东起洋泾港，西至民生路，南至滨江路，北连黄浦江，是上海港散粮、散糖的装卸专业码头，其中1、2号泊位建于1908年，3、4号泊位建于1924年。整个项目现存历史建筑群规模宏大，类型多样，包括排架厂房、仓库、别墅及筒仓等，将保留历史建筑12处，总建筑面积9万m2，民生码头段改造后将成为民生艺术港。 采访：吴春花

华鑫慧天地项目是由刘宇扬建筑事务所与阿科米星建筑设计事务所组成的建筑设计联合团队完成，已于2016年竣工。项目北侧毗邻龙东大道，东侧为申江路，南邻丹桂路。整个园区由18栋多层研发建筑（4或5层）和2栋高层研发建筑（12层）组成。 采访：刘笑楠

西店记忆文创小镇位于北京东四环与东五环之间，原始基地是被数条铁轨所割据出的一块城市边缘地带。文创小镇的总建筑面积预计为14 万m2，业主希望通过引入文化创意类产业来激活片区。作为最先介入的建筑设计方，刘宇扬建筑事务所承接了其中作为展示区的建筑改造设计以及销售中心室内设计的工作。

The graffiti wall meandered towards to afar, while jagged houses stood on the other side; The new rural construction plan was hanging on the wall, while people gathered before the old murals, smoking the poor cigarettes; They were imitating the rumbling sound of the train, however, they never see the real one… Illustrated in the movie Platform, this is a part of folk memory towards that period, as well as a description of 1980s from close to open, which symbolized the transformation of China in 1980s, and today the country is ushering in a new transformation.

项目是一个科技办公园区的销售展示中心，但业主所需要展示的装修面积只足够涵盖展示楼的两层面积。与其如此把所谓装修和毛坯区域毫无关联地按楼层分开而忽略了原来的空间关系，我们提出了分配有限的装修面积于所有的楼层，让局部装修过的体验空间和毛坯区域穿插并存，进而利用整栋楼的展示潜能，并扩展出空间的不同可能性。

上海国际汽车城创新港园区由A、B、C、D、E五个地块组成，由六家设计机构以集群设计的方式完成：A地块-维思平建筑设计事务所（WSP）、B地块-标准营造事务所、C地块-致正建筑工作室、D地块-大舍建筑设计事务所、E地块-刘宇扬建筑事务所、总体技术协调-上海建筑设计研究院有限公司。作为“园区生活综合体”，创新港建筑遵循街坊里弄式布局的整体规划，相对于常规的大尺度街坊、小比例的地块具有更强烈的空间渗透感、也带来了更加碎片化的建筑体量关系。

This essay abridges and reviews four of the author’s previous publications on urbanism and architecture of Hong Kong. It covers public discourse of urban space of Tamar, the exploration of “rail-served community” carried by “Linear City” research, design teaching & research at Chinese University of Hong Kong, and curatorial observations of Shenzhen Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale.

项目位于上海北虹桥滨水景观带内，占地面积1.3公顷，兼具运动休闲、社区游憩及环保教育等功能。 基地同时位于居民区与工厂交界的灰色地带；土地上堆放着大量建筑垃圾及土方，杂草丛生；周边道路来往着工程车辆，灰尘滚滚，居民们都对这块“废地”避之不及。设计过程中本着土方在地消化及再利用的可持续理念，创新地利用废弃建筑垃圾填充石笼，形成标志性的地景构筑物。既留住了基地的过去，又活化了“废弃空间”成为周边小区的公共社交空间。

随着乡建热、民宿热、改建热的持续发酵，在好山好水之地，租一片老旧的传统民宅，经由设计师之手，打造成城市人逃离喧嚣回归自然的度假居所，这样的案例已经屡见鲜了。但位于漓江沿岸桂林山水间的“云庐”酒店的建成，还是引发了许多的关注。

刘宇扬建筑事务所新工作室位于上海五原路居民片区内，该片区建于20世纪初,有着典型的法租界形制，地块被切分为小尺度的各色小院，院内林落着两三层高的洋房。偶有几栋红砖外墙的小高层公寓楼，也是那个年代盛行的“装饰艺术”(art deco)风格。临街虽有大小商铺食肆，在街道两旁梧桐树的笼罩下并不显吵闹。这里曾是达官显贵的住区，也受到张乐平等艺术家的青睐。时光荏苒，如今的住民组成已不似当年，不过岁月的沉淀没有被都市的喧嚣盖过，凝固在树木与老屋交织出的住区里。

文章对刘宇扬建筑师事务所五原路工作室改造项目与原建筑进行对比，认为改建设计的关键在于从原建筑生硬的戏剧化追求转向对日常性的关注，并通过日常的陌生化、陌生事物的日常化及对比的手段使日常的特定要素得以凸显，通过与日常使用和感知联系密切的细部处理进一步强化其设计意图。

在浦东慧天地项目中，刘宇扬建筑事务所与阿科米星建筑事务所的团队面对着速生的新城环境下文化参照的缺失。建筑师们通过计算模型得出数理结论以满足甲方需求，进而引入具有文化意味的符号与形式以填补文脉的空白，并生成建筑的新意义。这一过程揭示出当前城市状态下文脉的虚无、随机与游离，并将这些特质表现在建筑及其故事的呈现与讲述中。

张江集电港四期西块新建项目——华鑫慧天地的设计，通过研究高容量高密度条件下集中办公园区的空间规划和建筑设计的可能性，把原有的工业属性转化为研发办公业态，形成有效的城市更新手段。混合的建筑类型，不同尺度与不同领域感的公共空间，个性化、差异化的建筑形象在同一个园区内被有效地融合组织到一起，互相促进，形成了一个高品质体验的当代创新园区。

“云庐”位于从广西桂林到阳朔的半途，是一座深藏于漓江沿岸好山好水之间的精品生态酒店。基地是当地一个自然村中的几户人家的多栋老农宅，项目便是从老农宅的改造开始，逐步梳理宅与宅之间的空间，并将一栋老宅拆除扩建为餐厅和客人可聚集的场所。设计采取一种对当地文化和周围村民的尊重和谨慎姿态，规划与景观设计在最大程度上融入了村落结构，并在周边不另设围墙或其他防护设施。
